Elea Data Centers Partners with WEG to Enhance AI-Driven High-Performance Infrastructure in Brazil
Elea Data Centers, a leading provider of sustainable digital infrastructure and colocation services in Brazil’s Tier 1 and Tier 2 markets, announced the purchase of transformers from Brazil-based WEG – a global electro-electronic company providing equipment and solutions for industrial automation, power, and electrical engineering. The purchase of the transformers powering Elea’s 50MW high-voltage site in the São Paulo market falls under Elea’s US$300M first-phase investment in the company’s AI data center project.
Manufactured at WEG’s Gravataí facility in Southern Brazil, the transformers are scheduled for delivery in mid-2025, following Elea’s landmark agreement with Vertiv to procure cooling distribution units designed to support liquid cooling for AI applications at its São Paulo sites. These investments align with Elea’s growth strategy to address Brazil’s rapidly expanding digital landscape, fueled by the increasing adoption of digital technologies, while positioning the country as a major player in the global AI market.
Both WEG and Elea exemplify global excellence in the data center sector. As leading innovators in their respective fields and pioneers of cutting-edge technology in Brazil, Elea and WEG have formed a strategic partnership that promotes sustainable growth in the local market. The companies’ geographic proximity within Brazil ensures optimized delivery—critical for meeting deadlines between 2025 and 2026—while significantly reducing carbon emissions associated with the logistics and transportation of the transformers.
Transformers provide reliable, uninterrupted power to high-demand AI equipment, supporting each data center’s unique requirements. Transformers regulate voltage, increasing or decreasing it according to power needs. This minimizes energy lost during distribution, contributing to better system efficiency in each center while reinforcing Elea’s mission of sustainably powering the future. Additionally, the close regional presence of both companies within Brazil reduce the carbon emissions associated with the logistics and transportation of the transformers.
“As the only colocation provider using majority of Brazilian capital, we felt it was essential to acquire Brazilian transformers, thereby supporting the national industry and strengthening the Latin American sector,” said Alessandro Lombardi, Chairman of Elea Data Centers.
Lombardi emphasized that the partnership between Elea and WEG highlights the power of Brazilian innovation in delivering quality solutions for critical AI infrastructure projects. “WEG has demonstrated itself as the perfect partner for this project, as the company has a track record of working on large-scale industrial initiatives. The company’s transformers, designed with advanced efficiency, capacity, and sustainability features, will strengthen our IT infrastructure and set a new benchmark in data center reliability and sustainability.”
“AI is already a part of our daily lives: the electric infrastructure behind these scenes must be as reliable as possible since the continuity of the service is paramount. WEG has a huge footprint in mission-critical systems. Our transformers are designed and manufactured with state-of-the-art resources so that we can assure these applications’ required efficiency and reliability. Elea´s requirements for high-quality equipment, support to the local industry, and concerns about the amount of greenhouse gas emission drive WEG to contribute to a more innovative, sustainable, and efficient world, day-by-day.” said Carlos Diether Prinz, Global Managing Director of WEG’s Transmission & Distribution Business Unit.
